please explain if you could what each of those are called and if someone could give some advice on what i need in a provider to host multiple pages under 1 domain name
Is a subdomain something.something.com or something.com/something?
Subdomains may be costly to maintain, so use the folder method instead.
But a subdomain is like your first something.
The drawback of using multiple subdomains, is that fewer providers will do this for you. That means that you would be locked into that arrangement, and become a victim of higher Provider fees down the road.
Good luck and Happy Computing!
Is a subdomain something.something.com or something.com/something?
It%26#039;s actually:
subdomain.domain.com
When you were writing domain.com/subdomain
the /subdomain in this case is not a subdomain but rather a directory in the domain.
You can create PTR records with whoever is hosting your DNS to directories or subdomains on your domain.
Edit-sorry I just reread your question and realized you did have an example of the correct way of expressing a sub-domain.
Other Replys:yes, a subdomain is, for example instead of http://www.yahoo.com something like:
- http://finance.yahoo.com etc
Simply what you need is a posh webhosting company like I use:
http://www.1and1.com (US version)
http://www.1and1.co.uk/?k_id=3794345 (UK version)
All you do is buy a basic domain, then when your hosting package is ready to go, order additional subdomains from the control panel on the hosting companies site.
Once ready, the subdomains point to the same front page as the main domain name until you assign a folder to run the site you want to use the subdomain for, such as for example...... if you%26#039;re running a messageboard, and the script that runs it means users have to go to http://www.jdaltpol.co.uk/cgi-bin/YaBB/y... you can set up a subdomain that%26#039;s easier for visitors to remember, such as http://bbs.jdaltpol.co.uk
Or if you want to set up a seperate site from your main one for webgames (like the free ones from Miniclip.com or Kewlbox.com) set up a subdomain such as http://games.jdaltpol.co.uk and stick the files for the site in a folder such as /games/ so it points to http://www.jdalpol.co.uk/games/ (or whatever)
